The Job

How It Works
Siding does not keep water out on its own. The housewrap behind it, the flashing over the windows and the gap that lets the wall drain and dry are what actually do the job. Siding is the part that takes the weather and looks like something.
Which is why the most expensive siding failures we see are not the panels — they are rot in the sheathing behind panels that were installed tight to the wall with no drainage plane. A siding replacement is the one chance to see that wall and fix it.
Options
Least expensive, no repainting, and the most common on Watertown’s housing stock. Cracks on cold impact, which is why hail claims so often include it.
Holds up to hail far better than vinyl and holds color well. Costs more, and dents rather than cracks — which still counts as damage on a claim.
The most durable and the most convincing as a wood substitute. Heavy, needs painting eventually, and costs accordingly.

Same Storm, Same Claim
Hail that bruises a roof cracks the vinyl on the elevation that faced it, and the two are one loss under one policy. The Weather Service record for Watertown says so in its own words: the June 13, 2022 supercell caused “vehicle, shingle, siding, gutter, and window screen damage”, and the May 2, 2018 storm brought “wind driven, large hail, damaging siding and windows of homes”. The April 14, 2026 storm that put 2.75-inch hail on the town did the same on a larger scale.

Scope
Old siding off, sheathing checked for rot, especially below windows and at the bottom of the wall. Replaced where it is soft, priced per sheet in advance.
A continuous weather barrier, lapped correctly, with head flashing over every window and door. This is the layer that actually keeps the wall dry.
Siding hung so water that gets behind it can run out at the bottom rather than sit against the sheathing. The detail cheap jobs skip.
Corners, J-channel, window trim and the eaves finished to match, so the job does not announce itself from the street.
Straight Answers
Sometimes. Colors fade and product lines get discontinued, so an exact match on a twenty-year-old wall is unlikely, and a patch of new vinyl beside old will show. On a claim this matters: if a matching panel is genuinely unavailable, that affects the scope, and the photographs of the mismatch belong in the file. We will show you the closest available panel against the wall before you decide between a repair and an elevation.
A little, and mostly through the housewrap and any insulation board that goes on with it rather than the panels themselves. Air sealing the attic and getting the ventilation right will do more for your heating bill than siding will, and costs less. Where siding does help is comfort: a wall with a proper weather barrier stops the drafts you feel at the baseboards in January.
Most Watertown houses are three to five days, longer if there is rot to repair behind the old siding or a lot of trim detail to reproduce. Weather matters less than for roofing — siding goes on in the rain if it has to — but vinyl is brittle in hard frost and we do not hang it below freezing. Not in the City of Watertown, which publishes no permit for roofing or siding, and not in Beaver Dam, Waterloo or Columbus on their lists. Madison requires a permit to replace siding. It varies because SPS 320.09(2)(b) leaves repairs and alterations to local ordinance; the permit guide has every town, and where one is needed it is ours to pull.
