City of Watertown

No permit for roofing or siding. The dumpster in the street still needs a right-of-way permit, which we pull.

Beaver Dam, Waterloo, Columbus

Each publishes that siding and same-size window or door replacement need no permit. Change the size of an opening and the answer changes.

Madison

A building permit is required for replacing roofing, siding and windows. We pull it and price it as a line item.

Everywhere else we work

SPS 320.09(2)(b) leaves it to the municipality. The permit guide has all sixteen towns and their phone numbers.

Yes, and it frequently should be. It is one storm and one claim. If the adjuster’s scope covers the roof but not the visibly cracked siding on the same elevation, that is worth raising before the claim closes, and Wis. Stat. § 100.65(8) expressly allows us to discuss the damage with the adjuster and provide the estimate for it. Photograph the siding, screens and gutters on the day of the storm alongside the roof.

Both. Matching an existing siding color is harder than matching shingles, because vinyl fades unevenly and lines get discontinued, so we will be honest about how a repair will look before you commit. On a claim the same fact cuts the other way: if a matching panel is genuinely unavailable, the scope should say so. The siding page covers the materials and what each does in hail.

Usually, and by a meaningful margin. The set-up, the dumpster, the scaffolding where it is needed and the crew’s time on site are shared rather than paid twice, and new gutters go on after the drip edge rather than being worked around. Not in the City of Watertown, which publishes that no permit is required for roofing or siding. Not in Beaver Dam, Waterloo or Columbus either, on their published lists. Madison requires one. No permit does not mean no rules — SPS 320.04(2) makes the work comply with the state code either way — and the FAQ covers who should pull one where it is needed.
