Ridges and hips

The highest lines on the house catch the most wind. Ridge cap is usually the first thing to go, and an open ridge is a seam along the whole roof.

Rakes and eaves

Edges are where wind gets underneath. Once it lifts one course it works along the row, which is why a missing shingle is rarely alone.

Around anything raised

Chimneys, dormers and skylights create turbulence that lifts the shingles beside them, and the flashing there is what tears.

Previously repaired areas

A patch that was face-nailed rather than properly sealed lifts before the original shingles do. The repair history shows in a wind storm.

The Hidden Damage

Lifted But Not Missing: What The Inspection Looks For

The crease line

A horizontal fold across the shingle where it bent back in the gust. The mat is fractured along it even when the surface looks whole.

Broken seal strips

A shingle that lifted has pulled free of the adhesive strip below it. Lift it gently and it comes up; a sealed shingle does not.

Exposed nails

Where the shingle above lifted and tore around its fasteners, the nail heads below are open to the weather.

The slope that faced the wind

Straight-line wind hits one or two elevations. The damage is concentrated there, and that pattern is what an adjuster reads as a wind event rather than age.

It can be, and it is worth an inspection either way. Insurers look at whether the wind event caused it and whether the damage is limited or systemic. What often turns a small loss into a large one is finding that the seal strip has failed across a whole slope — and that is what the free inspection establishes. The storm record gives the dated wind event for your town, which is the first thing the adjuster will want.

Not necessarily. A shingle that lifted and laid back down can still be creased and unsealed. That is exactly the kind of damage that shows up on an inspection and not from the street, and it is the reason insurers argue about creased shingles: the photograph has to show the crease line and the broken seal, not just a roof that looks tidy. We can tarp to stop water, and your policy expects you to. We would not do the permanent repair before the adjuster has seen it, because then there is nothing left to document. If the adjuster cannot come for two weeks and the tarp is holding, that is the right sequence; emergency tarping covers how long a tarp can safely stay on.

Less often than hail does. Wind is directional, so one or two slopes take the damage and the rest are sound, and a well-documented partial is a normal outcome. The exception is an older roof where the test of lifting a few shingles shows the seal has failed everywhere — then the wind has told you what the next winter would have, and a replacement is the honest answer.
