The Isthmus, The Capital, And A Hail Record Nowhere Else Comes Close To

James Duane Doty bought a thousand acres of the strip of land between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona in 1836 and named it after James Madison, who had died that June. He had no city there yet — only lots on paper — and in November the territorial legislature voted to make it the capital anyway, largely because it sat halfway between Milwaukee and Prairie du Chien. The university followed in 1848. The Capitol as it stands now went up between 1906 and 1917, and the city has nine National Historic Landmarks, several of them Frank Lloyd Wright’s.

None of which is why we are on this page. Madison has the heaviest severe-weather record anywhere in our service area, by a wide margin. The National Weather Service has logged 65 severe events across the city and the communities on its edge since 2005, 36 of them hail and three of them tornadoes. Compare that with 30 events at Watertown or 36 at Oconomowoc.

The largest stone on record is 3.25 inches, reported by a trained spotter on the east side of the city on April 14, 2026 — the same storm that dropped 2.75 inch hail on Watertown that day. Twenty years earlier, on the evening of April 13, 2006, three inch hail fell across Madison and Monona between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m.; that was the same night a State Trooper measured a 4.25 inch stone near Lake Mills, forty miles east. One storm system, two markets, and the corridor between them is the one we work.

Where we fit here: the east side of Dane County — Sun Prairie, Cottage Grove, Marshall, Deerfield, Monona, McFarland and the near-east neighborhoods — is closer to our shop than it is to many Madison roofers’ own yards. Madison has plenty of established contractors and on the far west side one of them is probably your better bet. East of the isthmus, we are on your doorstep.

The housing on the east side is a good match for what we do most. Post-war and 1960s-through-1980s subdivisions with walkable pitches and simple gables, plus the older housing around the lakes and out through the villages. It is the same stock we replace in Watertown every week, in the same climate, with the same failure patterns — south-facing slopes going first, ridge vent installed over blocked soffit intake, and hail bruising that nobody claimed because nothing leaked.

Do You Need A Roofing Permit In Madison?

Yes. The City of Madison requires a permit to re-roof — City of Madison, Building Inspection — Storm Damage: “A building permit is required for replacing roofing, siding, and windows.” We pull it before the crew arrives and it is a line item on your estimate rather than a surprise; a permit pulled by the homeowner makes the homeowner responsible for code compliance on somebody else’s work.

How To Tell Whether A Dane County Roof Has Already Been Claimed

With 36 hail events on the record since 2005, a Madison-area roof of any age has probably been through at least one qualifying storm. Quite often it was claimed and replaced and the current owner has no idea, and that history changes what the roof in front of you actually is.

What we look for. Mixed shingle ages across slopes, which usually means a partial replacement after a directional storm. New shingles over old flashing — the most common shortcut on an insurance job done at volume, and the reason a six-year-old roof can be leaking at a chimney. A second layer at the eaves, which means a layover rather than a tear-off and voids most manufacturer warranties. And ridge vent cut into a roof whose soffits were never opened, which is the single most common reason a Dane County roof does not reach its rated life.

Any of those tells you the last job was priced to a scope rather than to the building. It also matters for your next claim: an insurer assessing damage on a roof with unrepaired prior loss or a non-compliant installation has an argument available to them that they would not otherwise have.

None of it is visible from the driveway, and all of it is visible in half an hour with somebody on the roof. If you bought your house rather than built it, it is worth knowing what you actually own.
